One Romani student decided to write a letter to the British station that hosts their version of the show, and puts the show in its place when it comes to the two cultures. While Romani people are defined as "a traditionally nomadic ethnic group." And while TLC likes to jumble the two together, both sets of people are insulted by the comparison. Irish Travelers are literally defined as a "traditionally itinerant ethnic group who maintain a set of traditions," most living in Europe or America.

The only problem is, these two cultures aren't similar in the slightest, and real Gypsies living today are extremely offended by the comparisons. If anyone has watched the show (sadly, I am one of the thousands that has been entranced by this show), you'll notice that TLC depicts the two cultures similarly. Here are 15 problems that this TLC show has shared with millions. However, since the first airing of My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding (and the British version), Gypsies around the world are speaking out and calling BS. It was all so daringly bold and nothing like we've ever seen.Īlthough the show was canceled 2016, it was still broadcasted for four years, giving audiences everywhere their own judgments on the Gypsy culture. We learned about their customs, their behaviors, and their ways of life. We were quickly introduced to two cultures Romani-Americans and Irish Travelers. It followed the secret lives of different American Gypsies every week, and quite frankly, most North Americans had no idea that Gypsies were still a real thing.
